 Here's what's happening in the Wabash Valley...


The ParkeCounty Chamber of Commerce is holding their annual community food drive to benefit the ParkeCounty Food Pantry through September 15th!  Most non-perishable food itesm are acceptable and donations can be made at any Parke County bank, G&M Variety, Rockville Public Library, Parke County REMC , and G&M Ace Hardware.  For more information, call 765-569-5565...and stay tuned to Gold 1-oh-4-point-9!

 

Everyone is invited to join the celebration of the Little Italy Festival, all Labor Day Weekend Long in ClintonIndiana.  The Festivities open with the grand parade Friday night at 6:30.  Activities will continue through Monday at the WabashRiver waterfront area...at the WineGarden on historic North 9th Street...and at SportlandPark.  Clinton area business have Little Italy Festival Activities and Attractions brochures...and more information is available by visiting littleitalyfestival.org.

 

Saline City Indiana is the site for the National Truck Pull, Saturday, September 15th.  Weigh ins start at 2 and the Pulling starts at 5:30 with classes from Stock 4-Wheel Drive to Semi Trucks...there will be a Jonah Fish Fry and other food available.  Then on Sunday come back for the Redneck Demoition Lawn Mower Derby at noon and Tractor Pull at 5:30.  for more information, call Greg Nicoson, 812-249-5903. 

 

This year’s Popcorn Festival Benefit Ride and Bike Show is Saturday, September 4th at CaseyFairviewPark, Casey Illinois.  It all starts and noon, Illinois time and proceeds will benefit 4-year old Gabe Wofford, helping to pay medical expenses in his battle agains Leukemia.  For more information, call 217-251-6302.

 

Clay County Search and Rescue is hosting a Corn Hole tournament and Pork Bar-B-Que dinner, in Brazil’s Forest Park, Saturday, September 4th beginning at 11.  Pork BBQ will be available starting at 2...and there will be free entertainment.

 

Raccoon State Recreation Area on US 36 in Parke County, will stage its annual fireworks show on Saturday, Sept. 4th.  Events kick off at noon with games and contests in the beach area, and at 6 a Karaoke stage will be set up near the beach. The fireworks begin at dusk, co-sponsored by Raccoon SRA, Bellmore Volunteer Fire Department and the Raccoon Lake/Union Township Property Owners Association. The cost of the fireworks is supported solely by donations from the community and park visitors.  Call 765-344-1412, for details.

 

Purdue Cooperative Extension Service in cooperation with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) will conduct a venison workshop, 6 to 9 p.m., Wednesday, September 8th on the Parke County Fairgrounds north of Rockville.  To register, contact Mark Spelbring, PurdueExtensionParkeCounty  (765) 569-3176.

 

Central Christian Church on East Wabash in Terre Haute invites everyone to a Jonah Fish Fry Friday, September 10th, from 4:00 - 7:30 pm...it’s all you care to eat delicious Jonah fish plus bread, drink and choice of two sides. Homemade desserts will be available for purchase and proceeds will benefit the ministries of the church with 10-percent donated to United Campus Ministries.

 

Altrusa International of Terre Haute will host the 28th annual Chili Cook-off, Saturday, September 11th in the Clabber Girl Festival Marketplace in Downtown Terre Haute.  Festivities will include a BeerGarden, Live Auction, live music and lots of chili tasting!  Proceeds benefit many WabashValley literacy programs.  For more information, call 812-208-2546.

 

The 2010 Backroad Bike Tour through PutnamCounty to benefit  People Pathways is scheduled for Saturday, September 11th.  Registration will open at 7am at Robe Ann Park in Greencastle, the Tour’s starting point.  For more information and entry forms, visit peoplepathways.org.

 

Dr. Loran Braught will be conducting a workshop for BEGINNING genealogists at Rockville Public Library on Saturday, September 11, from 10 am to 3:30 pm .  There is a non-refundable fee of $5.00 for handouts.  Preregistration is required due to limited seating.  The deadline for registration and payment is September 3rd.  Contact the library at 765-569-5544 for information.

 

The 11th annual SMWC Terre Haute Alumnae Club Scholarship Golf Scramble, open to men and women golfers, will be Saturday, Sept. 11 at Geneva Hills Golf Course. Cost is $70.00 per person. Fee includes lunch, greens fee and cart. Golf starts at noon. Proceeds will support scholarships for local women attending Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College. The Terre Haute German Oberlandler Club presents, the 38th annual Oktoberfest, Thursday through Saturday, September 16th through 18th at the Clabber Girl Festival Marketplace in downtown Terre Haute.  Admission is free...and Oktoberfest opens at 11am Thursday and Friday and 4pm on Saturday.  There will be live music, free Polka lessions, and all that great German food!

The Children’s Classic Run, a 1-mile walk and run for children in grades kindergarten through eighth, will be Sept. 25 in conjunction with the opening of the Children’s Museum and the Terre Haute Street Fair. The start/finish line is at 9th and Cherry Streets in Terre Haute. Entertainment and registration begins at 8 a.m. Race start time is approximately 9 a.m.  Proceeds from the event are donated to children in need through UnionHospital’s Pediatric Therapy. Many children who benefit from funds raised need treatment above the level covered by Medicaid or private insurance.  Entry forms are available by calling (812) 232-UNION (8646).

The “Ryves Neighborhood Association Block Party” is Saturday, September 25th from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at SpencerBallPark.  Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for children ages 2-12.  The menu will include hot dogs, baked beans, cole slaw, chips, dessert and drinks.  There will be many activities, including kids games, volleyball/badminton, a 3 point hoops competition, microchipping for pets and a DJ/Karaoke.  There will also be tables provided to promote area agencies and businesses. A cash-only silent auction will be held from 10:00 a.m. to noon; then items will be live auctioned at 12:30 p.m. All proceeds from the event will go to the RNA to help make changes and improvements to create a safe, desirable neighborhood for the residents.  For more information, call (812) 917-4397.
